What Works & Why

Because knowing isn't the hard part.

Somewhere in your working life there is a thing that worked. A decision that came good, a conversation that shifted something, an approach that finally took. And, if you are honest, a small mystery sitting underneath it: you are not quite sure why it worked that time, for you, when so much else you tried just slid off.

That mystery is the whole subject here. What Works & Why is a place to get to the bottom of it on purpose, and in good company, rather than leaving it to luck and hoping the good days repeat.

Two kinds of people

It works because two kinds of people end up in the same room.

Those who have lived it

Coached, mentored, taught, or simply handed the right book at the right time, and came away with something that genuinely changed how they worked. They know, often better than they let on, what shifted and roughly why.

Those who do the shifting

Coaches, facilitators, consultants, the quietly excellent practitioners who can tell you plainly what they do, who it works for, who it doesn't, and why. Not selling. Just saying, here is what I have seen work, and here is when it won't.

Not advice shouted from a stage, but knowledge with its workings still attached.

The map

Over time all of that gathers into something useful: a growing map of what works, for whom, in what conditions, and why. The point of the map is not to tell you what to do. It is to help you find the thing that fits your situation, your moment, the person you actually are, whether that turns out to be a method, an approach, a particular practitioner, or just the right book at the right time.

I have spent a long while watching what works and noticing why, more closely than is entirely healthy. I can help you see what I have seen. The rest of the map, we draw together.

Most people need to see it cleanly, not be told it.

Action

None of it counts until something actually moves.

This grew out of work I have done for the best part of fifteen years under a name some of you know: Asking Better Questions. Curiosity, clarity, action. That is the whole loop.

The invitation

This is an experiment, and it is early. Early enough that you can shape it.

So the first thing happening is not a launch. It is a gathering. If something has worked for you, or for someone you have coached or taught or quietly steered, I would like to hear it: a few sentences, and your hunch about why it worked when it did.
